According to local lore, Attala County is named after Attala, a fictional Native American heroine from a 19th-century novel by François-René de Chateaubriand. The county is rich in history, with notable landmarks such as the Attala County Courthouse, which houses the Attala County School District Superintendent’s Office and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
